Love is lyrical language, and, as Debbii Dawson knows, sometimes the needle begins to drift away from the grooves. The pop-slanted singer-songwriter’s first release of 2025, “You Killed The Music,” illustrates a path back to full-scale living after a relationship fails: Close the door, change the chords, and mix in some electric guitar and bass. “Then my feet start to move / Now all these brand-new / Melodies keep falling off the tip of my tongue / I’m hearing symphonies, you really made me think I was done,” she sings. Like butter dropped onto a burning cast-iron pan, Debbii’s voice has a sweet sizzle. It’s a particularly prominent ingredient in her slow ballads “Eulogy For Nobody,” the lead track to her 2022 EP ‘Learning,’ and last year’s pas de deux with Orville Peck, “Back At Your Door.” It’s in those two tracks that the Minnesota native hints at a yen for Americana music. That’s only a slice of the Dawson pie, however. She can’t let anyone forgot her love of ABBA, which she revealed to a big audience for the first time when she performed “Dancing Queen” on America’s Got Talent a couple years back. Since then she’s honed her love of disco, incorporating the steady percussion and bouncy baselines into recent tracks “Happy World,” “The Great Magician,” and the latter half of “You Killed The Music.” Deb certainly put us in the dancing mood when she rolled through our DSCVR stage.
