Pop fanatics needing a dose of the good stuff have a simple fix. Throw on Benson Boone’s ‘PULSE’ EP. From “Coffee Cake” to “Sugar Sweet” there’s an instant blast of hooks, a sizable splash of romance, and enough forward motion to get everyone on their feet. This effervescence is a bit of a switcheroo from the two songs that earned Boone so many early accolades, “GHOST TOWN” and “In The Stars.” The latter had a gospel magnificence on its side and turned plenty of heads; the former is a heartbreaker. The singer, who grew up in a Seattle suburb and had little interest in music until some pals asked him to join their band, fits comfortably in both ballads and bangers. And he’s a doer, playing several of the instruments on his tracks, and providing some of the artwork. He was on the ‘American Idol’ train ‘til he stepped away and connected with Imagine Dragons’ Dan Reynolds, who compliments Benson every chance he gets. Last year’s ‘Walk Me Home…’ EP proved the eloquence of those early tunes wasn’t a fluke. The new EP rocks. We invited Benson into the studio to have at it, performance-wise. He rolled through “Sugar Sweet” and “Little Runaway.” No, he’s not shy.
