Macklemore - GRIME - Live Session | Vevo ctrl
Prior to its release, Macklemore hinted that ‘BEN’ would be a bit “moodier” than previous projects. The famously truthful and self-aware Seattle rapper had been open about a relapse during the pandemic, which also happened to be the span in which he was working on his third studio album. So it certainly made sense that fans could expect an overall darker shade of their hero when ‘BEN’ arrived in March. Intro track “CHANT” references his aforementioned addiction and its repercussions within the first minute. Then it switches focus to the reasons he pushed through: family, his city, his self-worth. “HEROES” reveals that the “Thrift Shop” rapper has his childhood, his growth, and his origin story on his mind. Makes sense, he’s got a kid now too, after all. In reality, for all of its dips into deeply personal and dark places, this compilation of songs signal a triumphant new chapter. Not only through personal problems, but artistically as well. For one thing: Mack’s really in his rap bag. Check this “GRIME” performance, not a lot of dudes are spitting this clean in 2023.
