It doesn’t take long to stack up kenzie’s formal achievements. The 19-year-old pop singer has either held a mic or been on camera for a while now. From ‘Dance Moms’ to ‘Total Eclipse’ to ‘Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn,’ she’s become an acting pro. And “Emoceans,” from her ‘Phases’ debut, revealed just how adept she is singing her way through a parade of hooks. And yes, glad you asked, she’s got model chops as well. Sweet trifecta, right? There's even that fun she's had with her sister, Maddie Ziegler. It’s that singing part we’re tickled by, and ever since she dropped “Day & Night” with pal Johnny Orlando at the close of 2016, things have been moving faster and faster. Two years after that debut, the pair boosted their view numbers even farther with a little gem called “What If.” But as the title of her 2018 debut album suggested, everything changes. For the last couple of years, the work that kenzie has done has nudged her into a more progressive mindset, a little bit left of center, even though those hooks are still her close pals. “I feel like I’m not going in the full-on pop direction…I feel like it’s more indie pop, she recently explained. Wise move, because tracks such as “100 Degrees,” “paper,” and “sickly sweet” have just enough edge to make kenzie stand out even more than previous. And her songs have a sharper edge, too. Her Vevo performance of “anatomy,” a hard look at her estranged dad, carried the seismic gut punch of emotions. Now “face to face” addresses the plight of bad communication skills. “I'm getting tired of practiced lines/I wish you could take off your disguise.” It’s half indictment, half plea, and her performance choices treat it like a gentle nudge with a few barbs attached.
